Katia Capato

 Actress, director, stage designer

Born in Chivasso, inside the suburbs of Turin, on March 11th 1973, she made the language of theatre her way for personal, professional and social growth,  finding in it the favorite place of synthesis of the various  disciplines of thoughts and arts.

By today she is director and owner of Sala Scicluna committed to the Arts of Theatre, named in memory of her husband, the actor, dramaturge and Maltese director Joseph Scicluna, died on January 2017.

After she earned the artistic high school diploma at Primo Liceo Artistico of Turin, she continued her studies shifting her attention from the figurative arts to performing arts.

Selected by the professional company of theatre and research, Marcido Marcidorjs and Famosa Mimosa, nel 1993, she started her career by undertaking following a training course on the model of the centuries-old Italian theatrical tradition, made up of intense daily triainings under the direction of a master and alongside actors with a consolidated experience for the mise-en-scene of shows. As an actress in training inside the company she has participated in shows made with strong visual, choral and choreographic impact represented throughout Italy at renowned theaters and matinees for students, thus transforming herself from a student to a professional actress trained and experienced. Discipline and rigor combined with creativity, research and evocative skills, assimilated in five years of apprenticeship, have set the solid base for her entire career.

In 1997, thanks to this experience, she founded together with Domenico Castaldo, actor, director and playwright trained by the masters Luca Ronconi and Jerzy Grotowski, the Laboratorio Permanente di Ricerca sull'Arte dell'Attore (LabPerm by D.Castaldo). Production, training and research distinguish the mark making the company active nationally and internationally. LabPerm, inspired by both the Italian tradition and the contemporary research, has produced works, with the support of the Regione Piemonte, the Città di Torino, Sistema Teatro Torino, capable of probing the most varied theatrical languages. Over the years, through an intense production activity and theatrical research, LabPerm has formed and directed many young Italian and foreign talents towards the theatrical career .

Katia Capato is still working with LabPerm as actress, singer and trainer.

Since 2006 she  joined the profession of actress as director and set designer. The professional meeting with the Maltese actor and playwright Joseph Scicluna and the creation of performances and shows of Maltese and Italian production, have been an opportunity to express these skills, matured and grew through years of experience. The consolidated collaboration, assumed a characteristic style and aesthetic connotation, and enriched by historical, scientific and artistic themes, required in 2012 the identification of the works produced under a new name and brand: the theater company Nuove Cosmogonie Teatro.

The peculiarity of Nuove Cosmogonie Teatro is that of combining a careful historical research of the themes, the imaginative potential of theatrical language, obtaining shows rich in content and at the same time strongly evocative and poetic. A balanced dose of irony and comedy gives the right weight to representations making them accessible to an audience made of adults and children.

In more than twenty years, Katia Capato, in addition to participate as actress at the above named companies’ productions, has been directed by some Italian director: Roberto Bacci, Fabio Comana, Beppe Rosso and foreign: Peter Busuttil (Malta) e Antonis Diamantis (Crete).

Since 2013 she joined the project of scientific disclosure “Il Fisico in Teatro” of SaperCapire research group aimed on divulging scientific topics which results difficult in most of the case, making them curious, funny and above all interesting.

She currently lives and works in Turin.
